GM really wants this longer warranty to help convince those who are skeptic of it that the Volt’s lithium battery will last much longer. Volt’s battery is like cell phone and computer batteries, being hard to replace after wearing out, as outlined by the Associated Press. It will cost thousands to replace the Volt battery, weighing 400 pounds.
GM confident in Volt battery technology
Through a 240-volt hookup, the Volt battery can charge in 4 hours, and on a 120-volt hookup, it can charge in eight to ten hours. It was reported by Auto Week the lithium-ion battery has 161 components that can be covered by the warranty. The Electric drive components, thermal management system, and electric drive components be covered by the warranty. GM has the longer warranty because of their confidence in the battery which has a heating and cooling system that should extend the battery’s life when keeping it at optimal temperatures. This liquid powered thermal management system is only on the Volt. The Nissan Leaf electric car, accessible in December, has an air-cooled battery.
Prepare to wait in line for the Chevy Volt
If the Chevy Volt lithium-ion battery warranty has convinced you to borrow money to own one, you need to get lucky. GM only wants to build 10,000 Volts in 2011, according to another CNN article. In 2012, GM plans to increase production to 30,000 Volts but that isn’t expected to meet demand. GM also plans to only sell the car in certain places.
